Props are key to any great photo, they provide depth, interest and a focus. I listed fun prop ideas that you can find around the house and you will be able to produce some really cool content.
As a travel content creator I rely on my trips to create new content to share on my platforms. Now I have to find new ways to get artistic with photography! I want to share with you some fun ideas to take photos at home and hope it leaves you feeling more inspired!

Examples of Photos at Home
Garden/Plants
If you have access to a garden area on your balcony or backyard then you can use evergreen trees are your background. Alternatively use a flower bush/tree as a background. I stepped into the leaves and had them frame my face and body for a more interesting shot. Grab a few leaves on the ground and hold it in front of the lens to create a frame for yourself like I did in the second photo.
Mirror
Playing around with a mirror is a little tricky but once you get the hang of it the possibilities are endless. I found an old mirror about the size of a piece of paper to use. I suggest using a large mirror because it’s easier to fit yourself in the frame. The first one I bent over the mirror and let me hair fly. The second photo I sat on my porch steps and took a photo of my reflection and love how it turned out! There are endless options with a mirror, you just have to get creative!
Patterned Top
Playing around with shadow and light is fun and there are endless possibilities for photos at home. For these photos I used a patterned top and held it up to the light. Pick a top or really anything with medium sized holes to achieve a pretty pattern on your skin.
Tip: This photo works best if you are outside on a clear day. However it can definitely be done by a window that lets in lots of natural light.
Bedroom Ideas
Take some photos on your bed and get a little creative with your angles. I recently renovated my room and added a wooden headboard plus hanging shelves. Make your backdrop interesting with shelves, art work, plants etc. If you have a plain room than use a bunch of props on your bed to make your photos more interesting like hats, mugs, magazines, food etc.
Art Studio
If you have paints, brushes, canvases and artwork in your house then you can make a cool art studio! I have been painting for years so I had all these materials laying around. If you have limited supplies then your set up can be more simple with a few pieces of art work, paint brushes and paints scattered on the floor. You really can’t go wrong when creating an art studio, there’s also lots of cool setups on Pinterest if you need more inspo!
Additional Ideas
- Use a scrunchy and place it over your lens to create an out of focus circle around your portraits
- Create pretty flat lays on your bed or blanket and place books, glasses, a mug and flowers on top
- Lay down on the ground and place tiny flowers in your hair
- Create shadows on your face with blinds or cut out stencil shapes on paper

I love this! Thank you so much for sharing! What camera do you use? Can equally awesome photos be taken with a phone?
I use a sony a6000 with my 35mm lens. You can definitely take these photos with a phone, some newer edition phones have even better capabilities than cameras. Just play around and you’ll create something great!
